Alex Ward carving a wood

Alex Ward

Professional Chainsaw Artist

After deciding to pursue a profession that allowed him to combine his passions for art, the outdoors, and making people happy, Alex Ward decided to try his hand at chainsaw carving. He loved the concept of creating something personal and unique that could last a lifetime.

In June of 2018, he picked up a chainsaw for the first time and carved a name log. Since then, he has invested himself in learning and growing his art and skill. In the last two years alone, Alex has carved over 5000 name logs.

As a professional chainsaw carver, Alex relates to Michelangelo’s famous quote, “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.”  He says every log is the same way. He has a vision and simply has to remove the log until the image is revealed.

While the opportunity for artistic expression is a clear perk to the job, Alex’s favorite part of each project is interacting with his customers. He communicates with them and provides photo and video updates throughout the whole process. He is deeply determined to create the best product possible in order to see that look of happiness on his customer’s face when they see their personalized piece of art.

Alex’s wife, Carri Jo, also acts as a tremendous help and support for the success of Cedar Valley Carvings by sanding, sealing, and finishing each piece. You will occasionally even catch her behind a chainsaw! Together, Alex and Carri Jo hope to continue bringing smiles to faces across the state, nation, and world.
